Co-ops, Equitable Development, & the Cooperative Economy in Detroit

  • Detroit, MI 48201 (map)

Join DCWF for a discussion between community organizers & developers on finding alignment in how we define equitable development, building economic democracy, and thinking beyond capitalism. We hope to hold space for an honest dialogue about the misalignments in how we define “equitable development” and how we might seek alignment in expanding our imagination to new economic models when we envision the future of our neighborhoods. DCWF will share information about the relationship between cooperative economic development and equitable neighborhood development, and guest panelists will share their visions for a “People’s Cooperative Economy” in Detroit. Panelists will include Jerry Hebron of North East Christian CDC, Glen Miles & Mason Herson-Hord of Detroit Build & Fight and the Symbiosis Research Collective, and Malik Yakini of Detroit Black Community Food Security Network, and more TBA. Finally, join the conversation in breakout discussions about the present and potential roles and relationships between grassroots organizers and local nonprofits/CDOs in the movement towards building a new, people-centered economy.
